The Owl House is a horror-fantasy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm. There she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting. The resulting crash leaves the Golden Guard unmasked, unconscious, and vulnerable, but Luz is unable to leave to guard to die at Kikimora's hands and subsequently slaps the guard awake. Annoyed, the Golden Guard chases Luz through Latissa, and while she manages to elude him by using an ice pillar, the Golden Guard easily manages to climb up and corner her. However, neither Luz nor the Golden Guard want Kikimora to return to the Emperor's castle with the palismen, and the two form a truce.

Seeing no alternative, Luz takes the sword and goes after the Selkidomus, despite Eda's pleas. Luz believes she has to do this to make up for everything that has happened to Eda because of her. During this time, the cardinal palisman takes interest in the Golden Guard, but the guard is apprehensive and sees the creature as dangerous due to the fact that it is made of wild magic. They are shown to have a complicated and abusive relationship, as Emperor Belos aggressively clutches the boy's shoulder in "Hunting Palismen", and later misses hitting Hunter's cheek by a tendril, after Hunter fails his mission to capture palismen and speaks of healing Emperor Belos' curse with wild magic. It appears as though the Emperor set a fear of wild magic into Hunter, as he is wary of Flapjack when the cardinal palisman touches him. In "Eclipse Lake", Emperor Belos implies that Hunter's failure from the events of "Hunting Palismen" is the reason he switched Hunter with Kikimora to gather Titan's Blood. This makes Hunter believe he is going to be replaced, and he tries to get to Eclipse Lake before Kikimora. This causes him to have a mental breakdown, as he thinks he has failed again, and starts digging his own grave.
One day, he looks at himself in the mirror and is startled because of his shoulder length hair, with it reminding him of both the man he is a clone of and Belos. He would notice Flapjack pecking around the floor of the Old House, but he would not tell Hunter what he was looking for. As they fly to the Head, he starts fiddling with the controls, much to the annoyance of Alador. The two soon get into a fight and Gus and Amity start to argue with them as well.
During the Haunted Hayride, Hunter dressed as "Chief O'Bailey" from Cosmic Frontier, with the costume costume consisting of a black and yellow long-sleeved shirt with a planet symbol on it, a utility belt, black pants with cuffs and yellow edges, white socks, black and dark yellow shoes, and a robotic eye attachment. However, after being possessed by Belos and returning to the Demon Realm, he discards the robotic eye and removes the shirt, tying it around his waist, revealing a custom-made black wolf t-shirt underneath it. In "Clouds on the Horizon", Hunter, Willow and Gus meet up with Luz as they prepare to stop the Day of Unity, Hunter tells Luz that he is given orders from Darius to protect her. Luz and Hunter talk about what happened in Belos's mindscape, Hunter tells Luz not to tell them he's a Grimwalker, as he doesn't know if he's a witch or a human, but he is copy of someone Belos made disappear. Hunter reveals that he knows that Belos is Philip and that Luz unknowingly helped him as he overheard their conversation in "Hollow Mind", he also empathizes with how Luz feels about it. When group is caught by Odalia and Kikimora, Kikimora taunts Hunter about what Belos is going to do with him, but Luz tells Kikimora to leave him alone.
Like with Flapjack, Hunter loves Waffle very much and is shown to be very close to her, with the two often remaining at each others' sides during Hunter's carving of palismen for others and when having fun with their friends. In "Eclipse Lake", Flapjack continued to follow Hunter around despite his objections, but Hunter still hid the palisman from Belos for both of their protection. After fighting side-by-side in the old mine, Hunter acknowledged that the little bird never left his side and finally began to bond with him. At the same time, Hunter started being able to understand what his new little friend is saying, allowing him to learn Flapjack's name. In "Hollow Mind", Hunter is continuously frustrated with Luz's antics during their journey in Belos' mind.
Luz criticizes him for what he is willing to do to the palismen for the sake of the Emperor, and acknowledges that the Golden Guard is not a friend, but an enemy. Visibly hurt, the Golden Guard lowers his staff and reveals his name, "Hunter". The two fight, with Kikimora managing to set fire to a strand of Hunter's hair.
They find Willow, who has been recently mocked by Boscha, struggling to control her magic as the boys are ensnared in vines. They try to fight them off to no avail as Willow gives up control and laments how Boscha was right about her being weak. Hearing this, Hunter gives off a golden aura and teleports out of the vines and comforts Willow, saying she means a lot to him. After getting her to let out her frustration, he teleports her and Gus outside and they realize he has Flapjack's teleportation powers. He then teleports them out of the way when Luz's newly hatched palisman unleashes an energy blast.
Gus is initially distrusting of Hunter, believing him to have malicious intent. He asks Hunter not to mess things up for Willow, explaining that she has been working hard for what she has. After first meeting Gus, Hunter refers to his skills as pathetic, but when proven wrong after he shows off his flying skills, Hunter calls Gus' tricks cool. Their interaction throughout the episode were minimal, but by the end of the episode, the two are quite friendly. Similarly to Gus, Skara and Viney have little interactions with Hunter in this episode. When in the Human Realm, Hunter went to thank Luz for not revealing his secret to them.
Afterwards, he begins opening up to the idea of making friends with Willow, Gus and possibly Luz, the former of whom he is implied to have developed feelings for. Hunter's loyalty to Belos comes to an almost obsessive degree in "Eclipse Lake", as Belos tells him in his life, everyone in existence has a use and his own usefulness will come when the time is right. Hunter believes that if he himself can't be useful, he considers himself "worthless". This obsession has affected Hunter's mental health, as he has a mental breakdown for a moment when he feels he failed again. Hunter seems to listen to Amity's words that he does not have to think everything is an opportunity to justify existing when there are people out there who will not make you feel worthless and not want anything from you as they like you for who you are, and all he has to do is let himself meet them as she offers her hand.
Later, at the Emperor's Castle, Belos scolds Hunter for failing to retrieve the palismen. Hunter responds that if he knew more about wild magic and how it cursed his uncle, he could potentially find a cure. This causes Belos to lash out and just barely miss hitting him with a sharp tendril. Hunter returns to his room to find that the cardinal palisman has chosen him to be its wielder.
After becoming the head of the Emperor's Coven, the Golden Guard acts as the main enforcer for Emperor Belos and antagonist to the residents of the Owl House. However, a chance encounter with Luz Noceda and the meeting of a mysterious palisman named Flapjack, who chooses Hunter as his partner, gives Hunter a new perspective to life outside the Emperor's Coven. Upon this discovery, and realizing he can never go back, Hunter abandons Belos and the Emperor's Coven altogether. Following his desertion, Hunter relocated to Hexside School of Magic and Demonics in order to hide from the emperor's reach. There, he found acquaintances in Hexside's students, and after coming to terms with his identity, Hunter made it his goal to help them stand against Belos' plan to wipe out the Demon Realm. After joining the resistance, Hunter now wears a pale rose-colored undershirt covered by a collared light brown shirt bearing a cross-stitch in the center, as well as a brown belt bag.
